Over the last few hundred years, the telescope has been an instrument which has allowed the heavens to come into our doorstep. The key piece of equipment for bird watchers is binoculars.
Pocket binoculars are so handy and easy to carry. If it just for the kids to play, then go with a less expensive model that they will not break easily. That s the reason why astronomers prefer monoculars.
Hunters use binoculars, too. A field-of-view of 390' indicates that the width of the sight picture is 390 feet at a distance of 1000 yards. Field-of-view is determined by magnification and the focal lengths of the objective and eyepiece lenses.
Galactic clouds and star clusters look dim when viewed by the naked eye, but with binoculars they are much clearer. So, get a good pair of binoculars and enjoy the birding.
